One of my favourite shows over LFW was, bizarrely, the Topshop Unique show. I should say now that I was not a fan of their SS12 collection. It was a crazy mess of metallic hotpants and literal Cleopatra references all thrown together with some gold leaf. So needless to say, I wasn’t holding out much hope for AW12.
But I’ve got to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Unique Autumn/Winter 2012 collection was a definite departure from the label’s bold patterns and urban, youth inspired body-con shapes of Spring-Summer 2012. A more grown up collection, the A/W offering from Topshop’s in-house design team was pretty good!
Marching down to a soundtrack that spanned TLC, Roxy Music, MIA and Azelia Banks, the Topshop girls really made an effort. The pieces were quite Acne inspired…. over-sized, under-tailored utilitarian styled clothes. It wasn’t as inherently cool as Acne, but in some respects, a little more wearable. I really liked the gold dress and the big red coat, both very good-looking pieces that I would genuinely love to own. The styling on the models was really great too, excellent under-done hair and smokey eyes.
